First things first, where exactly is Waimea Canyon? It may seem like a simple question, but there are actually quite a few “Waimeas” throughout Hawaii!
The Waimea Canyon we’re talking about sits inside its namesake state park on the western side of Kauai. It’s not to be confused with Waimea Valley or Waimea Bay on Oahu’s North Shore. There’s even a town called Waimea in the upcountry region of the Big Island! So when you start doing your research, it’s worth doing a quick double-check to make sure you’re looking up the right place.
Where to Go During Your Waimea Canyon Elopement
When it comes to experiencing Waimea Canyon, there’s a ton of ways to explore and soak it all in. You can take in the views from one of the many overlooks, hit the hiking trails for a little more adventure, or even experience the canyon from above by helicopter!
The Best Viewpoints and Overlooks in Waimea Canyon
When it comes to viewpoints and overlooks in Waimea Canyon, there’s no shortage of jaw-dropping views. Here are a few of our favorites that really highlight the beauty and uniqueness of this incredible place.
- Waimea Canyon Lookout: This is one of the first lookouts you’ll reach when driving into Waimea Canyon State Park, and, it just so happens to be one of the best! You get some of the most expansive views of the canyon here, so it’s an awesome spot to to really take in how massive the landscape is.
- Puʻu Hinahina Lookout: While Waimea Canyon Lookout gives you a great sense of just how wide the canyon is, this viewpoint really showcases its length. You can see the Waimea River winding its way along the bottom and get a sense of how it carved this incredible landscape!
- Puʻu O Kila Lookout: Technically, this lookout is in neighboring Kōkeʻe State Park, but it’s so beautiful that we had to include it! Located at the end of Kōkeʻe Road (the park’s main road), it gives you breathtaking views over the Kalalau Valley and Nā Pali Coast. You really get to take in that incredible meeting of the mountains and ocean!
The Best Hiking Trails in Waimea Canyon
If you’re looking to add some hiking to your day, Waimea Canyon has SO MANY amazing options! Whether you’re looking for something short and easy or a trail that gives you a little more adventure, here are a few of our favorites.
- Iliau Nature Loop Trail: If you’re looking for an easy, family-friendly hike with a great payoff, this is it! It’s only around a third of a mile, but you still get some beautiful canyon views.
- Canyon and Black Pipe Loop Trail: Located in Kōkeʻe State Park right along the border of Waimea Canyon, this 4-mile hike is a bit more strenuous, but you’re rewarded with some of the best canyon views around.
- Puʻu Hinahina Trail: Starting near the lookout of the same name, this trail takes you below the rim and is a great way to experience the canyon alongside the lush tropical canopy. You can continue on to Waipoʻo Falls, making it roughly a 2.8-mile round-trip hike!
- Waimea Canyon Trail: This trail takes you through beautiful forests and out to incredible canyon views. You can then continue to Waipoʻo Falls and return via the Black Pipe Trail to turn it into a fun 3.8-mile loop.
Hiking the Nā Pali Coast from Waimea Canyon
Last but not least, if you have your heart set on experiencing the Nā Pali Coast but don’t want to deal with the usual logistics, you’re in luck! There are actually trails from the Waimea Canyon area that take you out toward incredible Nā Pali Coast viewpoints. It can be a great option if you’re hoping to include both of these iconic parts of Kauai in your day.
- Awaʻawapuhi Trail: This 6.5-mile trail takes you through a tropical forest before ending with spectacular views of the Nā Pali Coast.
- Nuʻalolo Cliff Trail: At 7.8 miles, this trail is a little longer and more strenuous than Awaʻawapuhi, but you’re rewarded with incredible ocean views and views of the rugged, dramatic valleys!
If hiking isn’t really your thing but you still want to experience the Nā Pali Coast, there are other options, too! You can take a boat out and experience the beauty of the coastline from the water, or, if you’re looking for something REALLY epic, a helicopter ride gives you a completely different perspective of the coast from above.
A Note About Holding Your Wedding Ceremony in Waimea Canyon
Waimea Canyon is a really special place. Of course, it’s beautiful, but it’s also an ecologically sensitive area with deep cultural importance to Hawaiians. Because of this, you can’t actually have your ceremony on one of the overlooks.
That doesn’t mean you have to leave Waimea Canyon out of your day, though! You can have your ceremony at Puʻu Ka Pele Picnic Grounds inside the park, then explore the canyon, hike its trails, and spend time at the overlooks for incredible portraits and an adventure together. There are plenty of ways to experience this landscape, even if it isn’t the backdrop for your ceremony.

Best Time to Elope in Waimea Canyon
Now that we’ve talked about the best ways to experience Waimea Canyon, let’s talk about timing! Waimea Canyon is beautiful year-round, but your experience can feel a little different depending on when you visit.
Sunrise vs Sunset
When it comes to choosing between sunrise or sunset for your Waimea Canyon elopement, you’re in luck! Both can be equally beautiful and offer similar privacy, so there’s really no wrong choice. We recommend thinking about your personal preferences and how each option fits into your overall elopement timeline, then going from there.
Rain, Clouds, and Visibility
Because Waimea Canyon is on the drier, western side of Kauai, you can typically expect less rain than other parts of the island. Of course, Hawaii weather can always surprise you, and cloudy or rainy conditions are still possible! But honestly, that can make for a SUPER cool backdrop, with the clouds rolling through the canyon and creating a moodier, more dramatic feel. So even if the sun isn’t shining, you can still have a really beautiful and unique experience here.
Seasonal Crowd Expectations
If avoiding crowds is important to you, we recommend skipping the busiest times of year, like summer and the holiday season. Weekends can also be a little busier around the more popular viewpoints.
For a quieter experience, we typically recommend visiting during the shoulder season and on a weekday when possible. That can give you a little more privacy to really take in the views and enjoy your time in the canyon.

Waimea Canyon Elopement Permits
Okay, now it’s time to talk permits! While we don’t typically recommend holding your ceremony inside Waimea Canyon, the good news is that you don’t need a permit to take portraits and adventure photos there. You’ll just need to pay the $10 parking fee, plus an additional $5 per person. That’s it!

When it comes to actually planning a Waimea Canyon timeline, there are two routes we typically recommend. You can either start your day with sunrise in the canyon or end it there at sunset. We usually don’t recommend planning your session around midday, since the harsher light isn’t always as flattering for photos.

Where to Stay for a Waimea Canyon Adventure Elopement
One of the other essential things you’ll need to plan for your Waimea Canyon elopement is where to stay! Luckily, we have a few favorite spots depending on the kind of experience you’re looking for.
Poʻipū
Poʻipū is a beautiful resort town on the South Shore of Kauai. If you want a more luxurious, resort-style experience, this is a great home base for your Kauai adventure. Just keep in mind that it’s about an hour from Waimea Canyon, so you’ll want to factor that drive into your plans!
Waimea Plantation Cottages
If you’d rather stay a little closer to the canyon, check out Waimea Plantation Cottages. They’re only about 20 minutes away and offer a much more low-key experience. You’ll have your own cottage with ocean views, and the whole place has a really rustic feel.
What to Wear to Elope in Waimea Canyon
Waimea Canyon is an incredible place to get elope, but there are a few things to keep in mind when choosing what to wear!
First things first, you’ll probably be doing at least a little walking or hiking, so comfortable shoes are a good idea. Flats or sneakers are perfect for navigating uneven trails, while high heels aren’t always the best fit for outdoor locations.
For dresses, we usually recommend lighter fabrics. They’re easier to move around in, more comfortable in the Hawaiian heat, and look SO good blowing in the wind!
For suits, think about colors. In the case of Waimea Canyon, olive green can look beautiful against the red rock canyon. The goal is to choose something that makes you feel confident while also complementing Hawaii’s incredible scenery!
Finally, clear umbrellas can be a great thing to have on hand in case it rains. Not only will they help keep you dry, but they can also make for a really fun addition to your photos!
Should You Elope at Waimea Canyon or the Nā Pali Coast?
Now that you know how to elope in Waimea Canyon, let’s address one of the questions we get asked the most. Should we choose Waimea Canyon or the Nā Pali Coast?
Both Waimea Canyon and the Nā Pali Coast are incredibly iconic parts of Kauai, but they offer two VERY different experiences. Depending on what you want your elopement day to feel like, one may be a much better fit than the other.
Accessibility Differences
When it comes to accessibility, Waimea Canyon is much easier to explore than the Nā Pali Coast. You don’t need any advanced permits or reservations just to visit the park, which makes planning your day a lot more straightforward.
The Nā Pali Coast, on the other hand, requires you to either secure a limited day-use parking pass, which goes on sale 30 days in advance, or purchase a more expensive shuttle ticket. That can make it a little trickier to build an elopement day around, especially when you’re already coordinating all the other moving pieces.
Because of the added stress of these logistical hurdles, we typically recommend couples plan to elope in Waimea Canyon.
Privacy and Crowd Levels
Because Waimea Canyon is easier to access, some of the major viewpoints and easy-to-reach areas can be a bit more crowded, especially around midday.
The Nā Pali Coast can also have visitors, but because access is more heavily regulated, things tend to feel a little more controlled.
If avoiding crowds is important to you, visiting on a weekday and outside of peak season at either location is always your best bet!
Scenic Differences
Waimea Canyon and the Nā Pali Coast also offer completely different scenery. Waimea Canyon, often called the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific,” is an ancient red rock canyon that drops thousands of feet from the rim. If you’re drawn to expansive canyon views and landscapes that feel a little more unexpected and otherworldly, Waimea Canyon could be a great fit for you.
The Nā Pali Coast, on the other hand, is known for its miles of dramatic coastline, with lush green mountains rising high above the ocean. It can be a beautiful choice for couples who want to experience dramatic scenery where the mountains and ocean come together in a really incredible way.
Can You Combine Waimea Canyon and Nā Pali Coast in One Elopement Day?
Yes, and there are several ways to do it! If you’re looking for a fun adventure, you can hike from Waimea Canyon to the Na Pali Coast. This is also a great option if you want to actually hike along the Na Pali Coast but don’t want to deal with all the logistics of getting there.
