Kaihalulu Beach isn’t just any old beach. It’s one of the few red sand beaches in the ENTIRE world. This rare red sand beach gets its striking color from the iron-rich volcanic cinder surrounding the bay, creating a landscape you won’t find anywhere else on the island. With fiery red cliffs, vibrant greenery, and deep blue ocean stretching out below, it’s a dramatic and unforgettable place to exchange vows.
If you’re planning to get married here, the permit process is pretty simple. All you’ll need is a $20 Wiki Permit. Just keep in mind that reaching the beach requires a short but steep hike, so it isn’t the best fit if you’re planning to include older guests or anyone with mobility concerns.

Ironwoods (Oneloa) Beach
If you’re dreaming of a classic golden sand beach, Ironwoods Beach is one of our favorite spots. This quarter-mile stretch of coastline tends to stay a little quieter than some of Maui’s more popular beaches thanks to its limited parking. That often means a little more privacy, which is always a win on your wedding day. The nearby lava rock cliffs also add a beautiful contrast to the soft sand, giving you lots of variety for your portraits. And since the beach faces west, it’s a great spot for sunset.
Another reason we love Ironwoods Beach is that it only requires a Wiki Permit, making the planning process nice and straightforward. It’s also relatively easy to access from the parking area, making it a great option if you’re inviting family or guests.
Paʻiloa (Honokalani) Black Sand Beach
Located inside Waiʻānapanapa State Park along the Road to Hana, Paʻiloa Beach is easily one of the most iconic black sand beaches in Maui.
The contrast here is actually jaw-dropping. You’ve got jet-black volcanic sand, rugged sea cliffs, lush tropical greenery, and the blue ocean all coming together in one place. Since it’s located on the island’s east side, it’s also one of our favorite spots for a sunrise elopement.
There are a couple of logistics to keep in mind if you’re planning a ceremony here. Because it’s located within a state park, you’ll need a Special Use Permit through the Hawaii Film Office, and it’s best to apply at least 45 days before your wedding day. Waiʻānapanapa State Park also requires advance reservations for all visitors, which can be booked up to 30 days ahead.

One of the coolest things about the Road to Hana is that there isn’t just one waterfall to visit. There are DOZENS scattered along the drive, and many of them are right off the side of the road. Yep, it really can be that easy.
That makes the Road to Hana a fantastic option if you want waterfall photos without committing to a long hike. It’s also a great choice if you have accessibility considerations, since many of the waterfalls are just a short walk from where you park. Best of all, you don’t need any special permits for photos at these roadside locations. Just keep in mind that, because they’re easy to reach, you may be sharing them with other visitors.

Bamboo Forest Locations
Believe it or not, some of Maui’s most beautiful bamboo forests are actually located inside Haleakala National Park. While the summit gets most of the attention, the park stretches all the way down to the island’s southeastern coastline, where the landscape transforms into lush rainforest.
One of our favorite ways to experience it is along the Pīpīwai Trail to Waimoku Falls. This 3.6-mile hike winds through an incredible bamboo forest, including a stretch of elevated boardwalk that feels straight out of a movie. At the end of the trail, you’ll find Waimoku Falls, a 400-foot waterfall surrounded by towering cliffs.
Because this area is inside Haleakala National Park, having your ceremony here can be a bit more complicated. But here’s the good news. It’s an AMAZING place for an adventure session, and you don’t need a permit for that!
The Best Maui Hiking Trail Elopement Locations

Waikamoi Nature Trail
The Waikamoi Nature Trail is a bit of a hidden gem that many visitors drive right past, but it’s such a special little spot. Located along the Road to Hana on the northeast side of the island, it’s a great addition if you’re already planning to explore that side of Maui during your elopement. The trail is filled with tropical plants, flowers, and beautiful overlooks that give you a taste of the lush landscape this area is known for. At just 1.1 miles, it’s also a pretty approachable hike, making it a great option if you want to bring along family or guests who may not be up for a more challenging adventure.
Waihe’e Ridge Trail
If you want to put the adventure in your adventure elopement, Waihe’e Ridge Trail is for you. This 4.3-mile trail includes over 1,500 feet of elevation gain, so you’ll definitely be putting in some work. The trail follows a ridge with drop-offs on either side, and conditions can get muddy or slippery depending on the weather. But despite the challenge, the views are SO worth it. Along the way, you’ll be rewarded with sweeping mountain vistas, lush valleys, and some of the most incredible scenery on the island.

Located in Upcountry Maui, the Makawao Forest Reserve is one of those places where you might forget you’re even in Hawaii. The landscape here feels very different from the beaches and tropical forests you’ll find closer to the coast. With towering trees, lush greenery, and a mix of non-native plants like pines alongside native kupukupu ferns, it has a unique forest feel.
The Kahakapao Loop Trail is the one we recommend checking out. At around 6 miles, it’s a longer adventure, but it gives you the chance to really experience everything this beautiful reserve has to offer.
Haleakalā National Park
Haleakalā National Park is packed with incredible hiking opportunities, from lush coastal trails near the Road to Hana to the dramatic volcanic terrain found near the summit.
One of the most unforgettable summit hikes is the Sliding Sands Trail (Keonehe‘ehe‘e), where you get to literally walk down into Haleakalā’s massive volcanic crater. The full trail is over 18 miles, but even hiking just a few miles gives you a chance to experience the unique landscape, with colorful volcanic formations, wide-open views, and a sense that you’ve stepped onto another planet.
Another favorite trail is the Seven Sacred Pools Trail, also known as ʻOheʻo Gulch. Located near the coast by the Pipiwai Trail, this short 0.6-mile trail takes you through lush greenery and leads to beautiful waterfall views. It’s a great option if you want a more accessible adventure with family or friends.
Like Pipiwai Trail, these national park locations are incredible places to explore during your elopement day, but we typically recommend using them for adventure time and portraits rather than your ceremony. Between permits, accessibility, and the logistics of hosting a ceremony in a public space, keeping your vows outside the national park can make the entire experience feel much more relaxed.
