When is the Best Time for a Kauai Elopement?
We get asked all the time what the best time of year is to visit Kauai, and honestly, there’s no bad time to elope here. Every month brings something a little different, but the temperatures stay pretty consistent year-round, making it a solid option no matter when you’re planning.
Microclimate Considerations
One of the most important things to know when planning an elopement in Kauai is that the island has a variety of microclimates. You can have one side getting steady rain while another stays sunny and clear at the exact same time!
The windward side, which includes the north and east sides of the island, tend to see the most rain. That’s what gives you those lush, vibrant landscapes you probably picture when you think of Kauai. Areas like Princeville and Hāʻena State Park are on this side of the island.
The leeward side, on the south and west, is typically sunnier and drier. This is where you’ll find places like Waimea and Poʻipū, which tend to have more consistent beach weather.
That said, this is still a tropical island, so there’s always a chance of rain no matter when you visit. But a little rain can feel pretty magical and add to the experience if you’re willing to embrace it. Beach Locations
One of the best things about Kauai is its golden sand beaches backed by towering green mountains. It’s one of those combinations that feels uniquely Hawaiian, and it’s a big reason why so many couples choose to have their ceremony right on the beach. Also, because Kauai sees fewer visitors than some of the other islands, you also have a better chance at a more intimate and uncrowded experience!
When it comes to beach locations, there are tons of good options. On the north shore, Hanalei Bay is a standout, with a wide crescent of sand and dramatic mountain views in every direction. On the south shore, Poʻipū Beach offers calm water, palm trees, and bright blue ocean colors. It’s a great spot for trash-the-dress photos because the ocean conditions are often very calm!
Another iconic coastal area is the Nā Pali Coast. It’s incredibly beautiful, but also a lot more restricted. We know a number of other beach locations that offer similar vibes while being much easier to access and plan around.

Forest Locations
If you’re drawn to something more lush and immersive, Kauai’s forest locations are hard to beat. Keahua Arboretum allows ceremonies surrounded by dense greenery, giving you that fully-in-nature kind of feeling. There are also botanical gardens like the National Tropical Botanical Garden that offer beautiful spaces that feel immersed in nature.

Cliffside Locations
Kauai is full of incredible cliffside viewpoints with sweeping ocean and canyon views. These are the kinds of places that truly will take your breath away!
Of course, one of the most iconic spots is Waimea Canyon State Park. While ceremonies aren’t allowed directly at the main overlooks, you can still take photos there. There are also designated ceremony areas tucked into the nearby forest, which makes it easy to combine multiple landscapes in one day. Kauai Elopement Permits and Marriage Licenses
Permits
Most Kauai elopement locations do require a permit, but the process is usually pretty straightforward. Many beach locations fall under the simple $20 Wiki Permit, which covers a lot of the popular coastal spots. Other locations, like Waimea Canyon State Park, Kokeʻe State Park, and Nā Pali Coast State Wilderness Park, require their own special use permits. Forest reserves have a separate process as well, depending on the area.

Marriage License
Getting your marriage license in Hawaii is actually a pretty simple process.
You’ll start by filling out your application online. After that, the two of you will meet with a licensed agent in person once you’re on the island. Just be sure to bring a valid ID with you.
The cost is $60 for the application fee and a $5 administrative fee. Once you receive your license, it’s valid for 30 days.

Adding Adventure to Your Kauai Elopement
One of the best things about Kauai is how easy it is to turn your elopement into a full-on adventure. The island is packed with opportunities from catamaran boat tours to hiking trails and more.
Hiking is one of the best ways to experience Kauai and here you’ll find some of the most iconic trails in Hawaii, especially within areas like Waimea Canyon and the Nā Pali Coast. Just keep in mind that some locations require permits depending on where you go.
- Okolehao Trail: A 2.7-mile hike with sweeping views of the mountains, ocean in the distance, and Hanalei below. This one is best for more experienced hikers who are comfortable with steep terrain and ropes.
- Kalalau Trail: A 22-mile trail along the Nā Pali Coast and one of the most famous hikes in the world. Expect dramatic cliffs, waterfalls, and remote beaches. A permit is required in advance.
- Waipo’o Falls: A 2.8-mile hike with epic views into Waimea Canyon and access to two waterfalls. It can get muddy after rain, so plan accordingly.

If you’re traveling to Kauai for your elopement, here are a few things to know when booking your travel and accommodations.
Where to Fly into
Lihue Airport is where you’ll fly into for your Kauai elopement. If you’re coming from the West Coast, you can often find direct flights. If not, you’ll likely connect through the mainland or fly into Oahu and take a short interisland flight over to Kauai.
Places to Stay
North Shore
One of our favorite places to stay on the island is Princeville on the north shore. It sits on a plateau with sweeping mountain views and easy access to some of the most beautiful beaches on the island! The town of Hanalei is nearby, along with plenty of stunning north shore spots.
There are lots of great Airbnbs in the area, like cozy garden cottages, along with luxury resorts if you’re looking for something more elevated. Thanks to the trade winds, it also tends to stay a bit cooler and more comfortable.
South Shore
The south shore is sunnier, warmer, and generally a bit drier. Poʻipū is one of the most popular places to stay here, with plenty of hotels, beach houses, and Airbnbs to choose from. You’ll also find great restaurants nearby, making it an easy and convenient home base.
Central Kauai
If you want easy access to both sides of the island, Kapaʻa is a great central option. It’s more budget-friendly, has fun local food trucks, beautiful beaches, and great shopping. It’s a solid middle ground if you want flexibility during your stay.
Vanlife
For adventure lovers who don’t need much beyond the essentials, renting a camper van is a great option. With your bed, kitchen, and everything you need built in, it’s an easy way to keep things flexible, spontaneous, and a little more off the beaten path!

Do you need permits for hiking the Nā Pali Coast?
If you want to hike the Nā Pali Coast, you will need permits depending on the section of the trail.
If you’re hiking from Hāʻena State Park to Hanakāpīʻai Beach or Hanakāpīʻai Falls, you’ll need a reservation for both parking and park entry. If you plan to continue past Hanakāpīʻai Beach on the Kalalau Trail, you’ll need a camping permit through Nā Pali Coast State Wilderness Park, even if you’re not planning to camp overnight.

What are accessible spots for non-hikers?
If you aren’t much of a hiker that doesn’t mean you can’t experience Kauai in an incredible way.
